Every year, there’s one of the biggest parties in the state – and it’s right in our backyard. The Washington State Fair takes place from Sept. 2-25 in Puyallup. From fabulous food to great entertainment, and beyond, the fair offers a little something for everyone.
Here are just a few of the highlights to expect. You can get a lot more details, including purchasing tickets online, at the Washington State Fair website.
The Columbia Bank Concert Series
The fair features great shows for many nights of the fair, starting with Ann Wilson, the lead singer of the classic rock band Heart, on Sept. 2.
Among the other highlights are country star and “Voice” judge Blake Shelton (Sept. 3), classic pop group The Beach Boys (Sept. 5), the modern-pop stage show for children called Kidz Bop (Sept. 14), alternative music star Lindsey Stirling (Sept. 17), R&B singer Maxwell (Sept. 21), and closing act Lynyrd Skynyrd (Sept. 25).
Thrillville and Sillyville
What is a state fair without a great midway? The Washington State Fair has one of the best with a variety of different rides from the traditional Ferris wheels to something a bit more heart-racing.
There’s also Sillyville, a special ride-centered section for children that also includes The Farm, a setting where children can get up close with little creatures that will delight them.
The Puyallup Rodeo
Running from Sept. 8-11, this annual National Finals Rodeo pro event has a $1 million purse. Apart from the action in the arena, there are also concerts from Josh Turner, Matt Stell and The Cadillac Three, plus a Parade and Cattle Drive, taking place down Meridian Street on Sept. 9.
Food vendors
There are dozens of items for sale from the vendors at the state fair. Sink your teeth into fare like Alaska N Dumplings, Big Island Poke, Brank’s BBQ, Calvary Catering Pretzels and Character Cotton Candy.
Of course, what would fair food be without corn dogs or the sweets known as elephant ears. Those are also both on the menu (the former from Corn Dogs Of The World, the latter from Duris Elephant Ears).
Others planning to be at the fair include Famous Dave’s BBQ, Fisher Scones, Earthquake Burgers, Kaleenka Piroskhy, Marcoe’s Chocolate Factory, Route 66 Lemonade and Wicked Pie Pizza, among many others.
Exhibits and attractions
While the food, the music and the rides are always big attractions at the state fair, some other exhibits and areas can be just as fun.
The Fine Art Show features items for sale as well as live painting and craft demonstrations. You can also find arts and crafts at the Pavilion displays called Hobby Hall and Home Arts. Photo reproductions and posters can be purchased and viewed as part of the International Photo Salon at the Art Gallery section of the fair.
Near the Fair Farm, there’s an area called the Planting Patch. This is a section where giant pumpkins, squash and other veggies are being grown, along with plenty of flowers and grasses to gaze at and enjoy in a unique type of scenery that’s only featured in a state fair.
And of course, what would a fair be without the 4-H clubs around the area. Their competitions and displays bring a charm to the setting that needs to be a part of anyone’s fair experience.
